Our focus on quality goes as deep as the land on which we grow grapes.

Secrest Mountain

Overlooking Oliver, this site sits at 487 metres above sea level with a south-west aspect. This mountainside bench is composed of a challenging mix of alluvial soils, studded with coarse sand and sandy loam. The cool high altitude setting of Secrest Mountain yields exceptional grapes at harvest with full physiological ripeness at lower sugar levels, which allows us more potential for delicate, lower alcohol wines. The constant breeze that moves across the bench partnered with full sun exposure throughout the day provides an environment that naturally keeps mildew and disease at bay. This allows our viticultural team to focus on low intervention and sustainable farming. The fruit from Secrest Mountain contributes to multiple wines across the JoieFarm portfolio, often referred to as the “workhorse” of our vineyards.

Con Vida

Located in the Sub GI of Skaha Bench, Con Vida Vineyard sits on a rolling bench nestled above the northeast shores of Lake Skaha. Planted in 1989 with predominately Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay, Con Vida Vineyard has been producing premium fruit for the JoieFarm portfolio for over a decade. We refer to the Gewurztraminer grown on sight as the backbone of our flagship wine, A Noble Blend. The Chardonnay grown at the top of the slope soaks in the warm afternoon sun producing beautifully ripe golden fruit destined for our En Famille Chardonnay. After years of farming at Con Vida we couldn’t be more excited to have purchased this beautiful farm in 2021.

Whitfield

Located in the Sub GI Summerland Lakefront, you’ll find our Whitfield Vineyard on the west shores of Lake Okanagan. On a gentle north facing slope, this vineyard is well protected from the hot afternoon sun and is entirely planted to Riesling. The unique aspect of this vineyard allows for a very slow sugar development which makes for wonderfully complexity and phenolic ripeness. Since 2018 Whitfield Vineyard has been the sole provider of fruit to our En Famille Riesling program. In addition to creating delicious single vineyard Riesling, Whitfield is an integral component of our flagship, A Noble Blend. Whitfield brings complexity and tantalizing acidity on the finish that we love in our aromatic white wines.

Smethurst

Perhaps the most stunningly beautiful site in our portfolio of estate vineyards is the 11-acre Smethurst Vineyard on the Naramata Bench. With plantings on this site dating back to 1982, the vineyard is located immediately up the hill and to the east of Nichol Winey. Plantings include varieties familiar to the JoieFarm portfolio including Gamay, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. Additionally, there are individual blocks of Ehrenfelser and Syrah, the latter of which butts up against Nichol Vineyard’s block of Syrah, which happens to be the oldest block of Syrah vines in Canada.

The vineyard’s slightly higher elevation assists in moderating the most intense heat of the growing season, while its southwestern aspect allows for maximum exposure and lengthy days of ripening. This means that the grapes on this site have the opportunity to ripen more slowly and evenly, collecting sunshine without the intense heat that a lower elevation site might offer, ensuring elegant fruit profiles that will retain the acidity and freshness that is hallmark to our house style.

JoieFarm Estate

Purchased in 2003, the estate property was originally planted as an orchard of cherries and pears. After consultation with growers and vintners throughout the valley it was decided that a split of Gewurztraminer and Muscat Giallo was best suited to the site. 4 years later, after much hard work and careful, thought these 2 varieties were planted. Located on the same site as the cellar and tasting room, the estate vineyard sits on a subtle slope above the eastern shores of Lake Okanagan. Our estate fruit falls into the Sub GI of Naramata Bench which is renowned for its beautiful terroir and stunning views. The influence of the bench terroir, temperature regulating properties of the lake, diurnal temperature swings and afternoon winds make this an ideal site to grow 2 of the backbone varieties for A Noble Blend as well as other favourites such as En Famille Gewurtzraminer, En Famille Muscat, and Celebration de la Vie Moscato Frizzante.

Sustainability

We are in the process of undergoing a Sustainability Certification through Sustainable Winegrowers BC. Our viticultural strategy maintains a long-term vision with respect to the health and sustainability of our vineyards. The focus with the vineyards is to achieve healthy vines through site-specific canopy management, soil reparation, and inter- planting each row with diverse, drought-resistant cover crops. At JoieFarm we irrigate as sparingly as possible, watering only when necessary based on the specific needs of each of our vineyards, depending on soil type, heat stress and vine health. We encourage the vines to send their roots deep in search of nutrients and water; the soils are high in organic matter and thus able to sustain diverse life at a microbial level.

Since planting our vineyards in 2007 and working with over 35 different vineyard sites over the past 18 years, we have learned that viticulture is not a textbook practice; it is a practice of constant observation. To farm most effectively, we walk our vineyards daily. This dedication to site-specific problem solving coupled with constant research and reading allows us to achieve a balance between respecting old-world agricultural approaches and being open to modern technology, making vineyard work easier and often more effective.
